Johnson died of a stroke not long after taking a seat in the US Senate – the same body, of course, that tried to remove him from the White House. The obelisk over Johnson’s grave in Greeneville, Tennessee, is intended to show that he saw himself upholding the Constitution against the political forces that impeached him.
