25 Days of Holiday Songs 2024: “Christmas Rappin'” by Kurtis Blow

He’s the guy named Kurtis Blow and Christmas is one thing he knows! “Christmas Rappin’” actually made some history in 1979, as the first major label rap single. Not only that, it nearly went gold (and Kurtis Blow’s next single, “The Breaks,” would be the first gold record in rap history).

The song itself is a lot of fun, an updated version of “Twas The Night Before Christmas” in which the “red-suited dude with a friendly attitude” drops by a funky holiday party and drops off some sweet presents. Though not even those great gifts can’t touch a line as perfect as when Kurtis Blow says Santa “gets cool for a fool going out every Yule.”
