25 Days of Holiday Songs 2025: “2000 Miles” by Sharon Van Etten and the Attachment Theory

I hear people singing, it must be Christmastime! What a joy it was a few weeks ago to find that Sharon Van Etten and her remarkable band had covered this classic Pretenders song. What a joy to be lucky enough to see the band live earlier this year. What a joy it is to share this one with you as we wrap up this year’s countdown.

Joy can be hard to find sometimes. Or, once you have it, the world seems to want to grab it back. This year has reminded me over and over that sometimes you have to just hang onto who or what brings you joy, no matter what screwiness is going on around you. Probably worth remembering that next year, too. “2000 Miles” itself is a reminder of this: we run into tough times, so what do we do? We do what we can to make the times better. Or, barring that, we think of better times. The moments when “our hearts were singing.” When “it felt like Christmastime.”

Here’s hoping for good times today and every day, until we get together again next December for another countdown. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
