25 Days of Holiday Songs: “Silver and Gold” by Burl Ives

I think it’s well documented by now that I’ve turned into a complete softy since I became a dad, and that’s especially true at Christmas. Not only do I tear up seeing my extended family on Christmas Eve and when my kids get up Christmas morning, I tear up at virtually every holiday TV special and movie we watch. This is probably not what the makers of “Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever” intended but there it is.

Anyway, one of my softest holiday moments is during the original Rankin-Bass “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” special, when Sam the Snowman (Burl Ives) sings about silver and gold decorations on every Christmas tree. You can’t dazzle me with fancy jewelry or big gold bars in a bank vault, but a little faux-aluminum tinsel on somebody’s tree will get me every time.
