Watching TV on the last night of the year? That's fine; in fact, there’s a tradition on German TV of showing a classic comedy sketch every December 31.

There are lots of winter sports, like snowshoeing, skiing, ice skating, sledding, hockey and curling. One sport that used to be a big hit around this time of year? Competitive barrel jumping.

Me: “Our tradition is to make our own pizzas on New Year’s Eve and stay up to midnight if we want.” 9 year old: “And hopefully don’t barf.”
